Position overview
Salary range: The current salary range for this position is $78,200 -$123,400 (9-month academic year salary). However, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Anticipated start: July 1, 2025

Review timeline: We anticipate first round interviews in mid-December of 2024, and campus visits / finalist interviews in January and February of 2025.

Position description

We seek applicants for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in the area of Global Development Policy: Climate, Energy, and Environment.

Successful applicants will have a research, teaching and public impact program focused on local, regional, and global resource use, human well-being and environmental sustainability. Focal areas may include, but are not limited to: energy, water or other resource access and management; climate adaptation or mitigation strategies including how the history, drivers, impacts and potential solutions to systematic inequality across gender, socioeconomic or other dimensions of human society; the role of extreme events as existential threats to communities, nations, and regions; the energy transition in emerging economies; short- and long-run tradeoffs and opportunities for environmental sustainability in the context economic; climate as a cross-cutting development and equity challenge; and geopolitics and political economy of natural resource management, infrastructure, and climate change.

Successful candidates will bring quantitative, qualitative, and/or computational, or mixed methods to their research and teaching. Methods that consider justice principles (e.g., equality, equity, need) as it interacts with climate change and development are of particular interest.

The successful applicant's faculty line would rest within GSPP. Ideal candidates will be prepared for an intellectually and methodologically rigorous academic setting, working with an exciting and energetic group of faculty committed to public impact and change. should have an existing track-record of independent or collaborative research excellence, experience or aspirations to teach and be actively engaged in a professional graduate school setting, and a commitment to interdisciplinary perspectives and collegial service. We encourage applications from individuals with an understanding of, and commitment to, the public university mission, as well as a familiarity with schools of public policy. Prior policy-related work experience is desirable. We will consider scholars completing their PhD in Spring 2025, as well as those currently serving in post-doctoral or assistant professor positions.

GSPP has identified energy and climate policy as a strategic area of investment. The new hire will bolster existing assets such as the Center for Environmental Public Policy (CEEP), the India Energy and Climate Center (IECC), and Masters of Development Practice (MDP) degree program, as well as new initiatives related to global climate policy leadership curriculum, research projects, and events. Additionally, UC Berkeley has a rich climate and sustainability research community that extends across many campus units, research centers focused both topically and geographically, as well as programs centered at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, in the Energy and Resources Group, and in a number of centers and research clusters, including the Center for Environmental Public Policy, the Center for Law, Energy and the Environment,, and the Roundtable on Climate and Environmental Justice. The successful applicant will have diverse opportunities to engage with and build research and teaching connections with these cross-campus units from their base in GSPP.
